Accessibility
What is accessible here, and what isn't
This statement is written so you know in advance what to expect — including what we haven't solved.
On the site
- All text scales to 200% without the layout breaking or content being cut off.
- Every part of the site is reachable by keyboard alone, and the focus ring is visible on every interactive element.
- Images that carry information have alternative text; decorative images are marked so a screen reader skips them.
- Contrast was measured on every piece of text on every page, against the background actually behind it. The quietest tone in the palette was corrected to pass — it was 3.39:1 and is now 5.2:1.
- The time grid and date strip in the booking form behave as a selection group: one Tab stop for the whole group and arrow keys to move inside it, rather than seventeen stops in a row.
- Every button and link meant for a finger is larger than 40 pixels. Links inside a sentence stay at text size, as is conventional.
- The site is rich in animation. With the system set to reduced motion, not a single canvas stays alive — not hidden, but never mounted. A section that was a WebGL gallery becomes a static strip of images, so the content doesn't disappear along with the motion.
At the restaurant
- The entrance on Van Brunt is at sidewalk level, with a 36-inch door and no step.
- The path from the door to the dining room is 44 inches at its narrowest and takes a wheelchair.
- The back yard has one step, five and a half inches. There is a portable ramp — if you need it, put it in the booking notes so it's out before you arrive.
- The restroom is single-occupancy and is not ADA compliant. The building is a 1920s boat-repair shop and the plumbing wall cannot move without gutting it. We state this plainly so nobody finds out on arrival.
- The menu can be enlarged on your phone through this site, and staff will read it aloud on request.
- Red Hook has no subway. The B61 bus is wheelchair accessible; the NYC Ferry is accessible at both ends.
- Service animals are welcome, obviously.
